The goal for 6th grade is for the student to grow into a confident and responsible individual. The policies set forth in 6th grade are aligned with this goal, and will help the student be successful this year and for the years to come. Parents will acknowledge this policy by signing and returning their copy of the policy notice at the beginning of the school year. Absences Please send a note signed by parent or guardian with the student on the day he/she returns from any absence. The student is solely responsible for making up missed assignments and tests. You may submit a HW request by calling the main office by 10am. Homework is not provided in advance of planned absences. Students are required to check my Google Classrooms for HW assignments. It is also a good idea to get the phone number of a "HW Buddy" for extenuating circumstances. Students' attendance on Google Classroom is required for assignments throughout the year. Reading: Students are required to read an individual "Book-A-Month" and complete a reading log for each. Your child should read for pleasure at least 20 minutes per night. Additionally, your child is encouraged to read books of a variety of genres. Students must have their "pleasure reading” book with them each day in class. Students may use their own books, their local library, the school library, or my classroom library books. Tests/Quizzes: Students will be given quizzes and tests in all subjects periodically. Students will be informed of these assessments in advance. Ample time and a quiet place to work/study at home are essential to understanding and retaining information. The development of good study habits at this age is important and will benefit your child through the many years of education ahead. Behavior: Appropriate sixth grade behavior is expected in school and online, including respect toward students, teachers, administrators and staff members. See the updates on cell phones and other policies and regulations in the Mount Sinai Student Handbook and Code of Conduct. Offenders will be subject to disciplinary action beginning with a verbal warning. Repeat offenses will incur written notification to parents, phone call home and written disciplinary referral to administration as necessary, in addition to the new point system which can be found in the Handbook. Appropriate use and actions regarding computer technology and devices is included in this policy with regard to safety, security and privacy. Recording of any "live" lesson/session is strictly prohibited.
HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework Sixth grade students are provided with an agenda/planner book and a Chromebook during the first week of school. Homework assignments are announced each day in class and/or on my Google Classrooms. Students are responsible for listening closely to assignments, and carefully and accurately writing them down and checking Google Classroom each day for any notices, updates, or other assignments. Writing and DOING the assignments are the student’s responsibility alone. Homework Policy forms will be signed and returned acknowledging this responsibility and specifying consequences for incomplete HW. Homework assignments include the task of having all tests, quizzes, and graded assignments signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school the next day. Grading: Each quarter, in addition to test and quiz grades, a HW grade is given. It counts as one "quiz-grade" per subject per quarter. Each student starts the quarter with 100 points as his HW grade. For each incomplete or missing HW assignment, 5 pts. will be deducted from this grade. At the end of the quarter, the HW grade will be entered in Power School as one Quiz for the quarter. Each new quarter begins with a new starting HW grade of 100.
